Do You See What I Mean?
I am a colorist and my paintings are highly subjective and improvisational. Colors are used intuitively to create structure on the picture plane. All portraits are self-portraits.
There is no subject matter in my painting. I don’t try to represent anything but simply get together with the paint to see what happens. My process strives for states of creative automatism – the avoidance of conscious intent.
I’d like to communicate the way icon painters did by transporting the viewer beyond the world of appearance. My images are invitations to open a door leading to where meaning is suggested. Imagery, by its nature, does not work by linear or rational communication. Meanings are the unpredictable outgrowths of the experiences of painting and viewing. The completed works are records of experiences intended to be shared.
My art practice, like a wired octopus, is complex and multi-faceted. I draw to visualize ideas and enjoy my imagination. Drawing from life - through perception - grounds me in the tactile. By painting and drawing I integrate my inner and outer worlds and sharpen my senses.
